It's no longer news that the Federal University, Oye Ekiti (Fuoye), has been renamed after the late military governor of the old Western Region, General Adeyinka Adebayo (retd.), by the Federal Government.

Buy why?

Here's what we've been able to gather regarding the Federal Government Decision to immortalize Gen. Adebayo

Acting President Yemi Osinbajo stated this on Saturday 20th May, 2017 at the funeral service held at All Saints Anglican Church, Iyin Ekiti.

Reason 1
General. Adebayo was described by Osinbajo as an officer and a gentleman indeed, saying his military trajectory was in a way a lesson in Nigeria’s history.

Reason 2
General Adebayo fought relentlessly for the unity of the country during the civil war that ravaged the country between 1967 and 1970, and that he suggested to the federal government to opt for dialogue rather than the use of force.

Reason 3
“This is a celebration of a life of sacrifice and dedication to one’s community and nation. General Adebayo was a fine gentleman and the first indigenous Chief of Army Staff who Mr. President had a harmonious relationship with.

Reason 4
“As a military officer in 1967, he fought hard to prevent the rebel army from making an incursion into Lagos, the then Federal Capital Territory. He headed the post-war conciliation committee for the integration of the Igbos back to Nigeria. In fact, his military trajectory was a case study in Nigeria.

Reason 5
“General Adebayo did not only serve Nigeria, he served with integrity. In the struggle for democracy in Nigeria, General Adebayo was a member of National Democratic Coalition.”

He said the Adeyinka Adebayo Federal University, Oye-Ekiti, was one of the ways Nigeria would appreciate his contributions to the unity of the country and immortalise him.

This idea of immortalizing an individual by changing names of universities to theirs is highly trending but only in Nigeria. I’m yet to hear any of such attempt by the developed nations.

I’m afraid because should this trend prevail in this manner then we would all wake up one day to hear the news ? that our dear University of Ibadan is to be used for the immortalization of an illustrious son of the soil; maybe the Alááfín of Oyo or the Olúbadàn of Ibadan land.

So then UI would be called what?
Alàáfín of Oyo University? or Olúbadàn University of Ibadan?☺

    God help Nigeria and Nigerians!

Truly, he is a legend but the question is, of wot benefit will diz be to the skool??
Looking @ the negative part of this name thing..
***Things/materials that bn branded FUOYE will need to be change, The FUOYE flower for an example, i wonder how much will have bn spent on it but now, it will be destroy. All the Fuoye name on id card, cars, bus, buildings will be erase nd printing of AAUO will take place. i wonder how much will need to be spend again.

Fuoye need buildings, we need development not changing of name.

There are many other way of remembering late General Adebayo contribution to Nigeria at large…. Instead of changing Fuoye to AAUO, why not build in FUOYE the bigger Auditorium in Nigeria and name it after him.
I dont know if this AAUO will reduce our skool feez by any percentage.

Ekiti at large need development, thousands of children in oye alone are bn abuse everyday, do things that will be of good benefit to the whole ekiti!
On campus, if u try trekking from phase 1- phase 3 for just a week, you will break down for 2weeks. Help to developed Fuoye not change name dat is just gaining ground pls!

Obviously General Adebayo Adeyinka is a legend but who e EPP……….there are better way to honour him than changing the school name.

There is a lot of advantage attached to the ‘‘Federal’’ such as job opportunity nd one of the main reason most of us are in school. The AAU sounds like one state uni or college of education.

The last time we travelled to Abj with the school bus for field trip, those Army had no right to stop us, seeing the name federal was a gr8 advantage to us.

nothing is wrong with the name changing if they will take adequate care of the internal system of the institution. but failure to do this may lead to…. something.

Change of name is not the next thing with everything happening in the University but he has done his and its left to us to voice out our opinion by sayinh no to the change of name.
Uniosun said no to it and they won the case when their name was almost change to Bola ige university
Unilag said no to it too they won too when their name was alomst changed to Moshood Abiola university….
Fuoye it’s time to say No and fight for the right thing….. No Aau.. Fuoye stands
